Facbook real-time ads will be based on the content of your wall, something that could work wonders for targeting the right people.

So lets take an example of how this might work. Let’s assume you have just purchased or are thinking about purchasing a new car and you mention this to your friends on your wall “Can’t wait to go buy my new car. Thinking of getting that Ford Focus I test drove last week”.

Now all of a sudden car insurance adverts start appearing on your Facebook page. How convenient, you needed to get some quotes in and you might just click on one of the adverts.

To me this is a major step forward in getting adverts in front of the most targeted users. It could cover all sorts of possibilities. “Yeah going to Marbella next week to look for a property to buy” and low and behold there would be adverts from savvy estate agents advertising on Facebook.

Now sadly this is still at the testing phase at the moment but once this rolls out I can see this being a very popular way for businesses to target the right people in real-time, something Google cannot do with its normal ad network as you have to pre-choose the keywords you want to appear for,

At the moment we can’t say how you will set up your targeting but we assume it will be via a keyword or set of keywords that trigger the advert if mentioned in s status update.

Let’s take an old favourite article website used by tens of thousands of SEO firms, EzineArticles. They have just seen their traffic plummet as a result of major ranking drops in SERPS as a direct result of update Panda. Many other article and directory websites have also been hit hard as they are all considered to have too diverse subject matter and many ‘spammy’ articles.

I for one have used Ezine Articles to great effect, not only from a traffic gererating source but of course also for link development. However, that is all about to change. One of the decisions that Ezine Articles is now taking is to make all links ‘nofollow’ blowing away any ranking advantages. They are also getting stricter with accepted articles and subject matters so the usual spam orientated suspects may need to find other ways to submit their crap.

Taking a subjective view of why EzineArticles has been hit so hard you can sort of understand why they might fall under the ‘low quality’ content banner. Most websites that battle for good positions and market reach have a main ‘subject’ or range of subjects like for example Airport Information Guide. Although it has information on many different airports from around the world its subject matter is airports and aviation.

Now if you look at Ezine Articles you will see thousands of different subject matters and many articles with similar ‘content’. Let’s face it, there is only so many different ways you can write about getting out of debt or making money on the internet. If you look at the article list you will find everything from ‘cancer cures’ through to selling gold.

My philosophy to SEO and content has always been ‘no duplicate text’ and to write good quality, on theme and useful content. In fact I have argued with and bored clients to death with my constant harping on about their content. Now I bet they are gald I did!

Google is at war!

Over the last month we have seen Google crack down with an iron fist on websites that use illicit forms of link development. Forbes.com was again hit with a penalty for selling links for SEO purposes and a couple of major online retailers were also slapped with penalties resulting in loss of rankings, one for offering discounts to students for linking to their site from college websites.

The latest change however is said to impact about 11.8% of websites. Now when you think of how many sites are out there on the Internet, that is one hell of a lot of sites.

The latest Google algorithm update is aimed at getting rid of ‘low quality’ websites. If you or your SEO company has always paid attention to Google’s webmaster guidlines in terms of links, content and other best practises, then you shouldn’t have too much to fear.

However, if you have copied content from other websites, purchased lots of low quality, non-relevant links or abused the general guidelines, you might see your website heading down the rankings at a rate of knots.

It is said that you will even see changes in the top positions, something that is not really affected by minor algorithm tweaks.

We are yet to notice th eimpact but like most major algorithm updates from Google it takes time to roll out so don’t breathe that sigh of relief just yet.
